515,388. Photo-mechanical printing-surfaces. ODHAMS (WATFORD) Ltd., and VERRIOUR, S. J. May 31, 1938, No. 16290. [Class 98 (ii)] In preparing photogravure or rotagravure printing-formes, a composite positive transparency including both type or line matter and pictorial matter (i.e. matter not readily reducible to type or line) is prepared by (1) making a relatively opaque impression of the type or line matter on a transparent or transluscent carrier, (2) producing therefrom a negative by photographic contact printing, (3) combining this print with a paper negative of the pictorial matter by planning as described in Specification 487,570, (4) photographing this composite negative to obtain the composite positive transparency. The impression (1) may be made, for example with black or white ink on a thin cellulosic carrier, from set-up type, or in a machine which produces an impression from single types or lines of type; or it may be made in a photographic type-composing machine. The contact print (2) may be made on tinted sensitized paper. Specification 221,505, [Class 98. (ii)], also is referred to.
