Description

UNITED STAT PATENT OFFiiIE;
PROCESS FGR PREPARING COMPOSITE NEGATIVES FOR USE IN THE PRODUC- TION- F PHOTOGRAVURE AND ROTO- GRAVURE PRINTING FORMS Stanley .iehn Verriour, Watford, England No Drawing. Application May 31, 1939, Serial No. 276,558. In Great Britain May 31, 1938 4 Claims. (Cl. 955) The invention relates to processes for preparthe material known under the registered tradeing composite positive transparencies containing mark Cellophane. It is unimportant what both pictorial and line or type matter for use kind of ink is employed in making the pull upon in the production of photogravure and rotothe Cellophane or other translucent carrier,
5 gravure printing forms, and it is more particuthat is to say whether the ink is black or white. 5 larly concerned with a process for the production It is necessary only that the ink shall be relaof paper negatives for planning to obtain the tively opaque so that a contact may be made desired composite negatives from which the comfrom the resulting pull with the aid of sensiposite originals are produced. tised paper. It is usually necessary to plan both type or It is advantageous to emp y sensitised p p 10 line matter and pictorial matter in the obtaining which, in the resulting paper negative, gives a of the desired composite negative. In order to light colour on black instead of a pure white carry out the planning operation with simplicity on black. Thus, in carrying the present invenand speed, it has been found desirable to employ into into effect a tinted sensitised p p r y paper negatives on a black ground, the negatives be employ d. being partly pictorial matter and party line or In the above, reference has been made to the type matter. The paper negatives of pictorial production of a pull upon a transparent carrier. matter are produced photographically whilst the It is to be understood that the carrier bearing type or line negatives are produced by first prerelatively opaque impressions may be made from paring a pull from set-up type or line matter, a bank of set-up type or may be produced in a 20 and then photographing the pull on the paper machine in which an impression is made from that it is desired to use in the planning. A process for preparing a composite posi- It will be observed that in obtaining a paper tive transparency containing both pictorial and negative for the planning stage, of the type or line or type matter for use in the production of 30 line matter, the indirect method is employed of pho s v r and rotogravure printing f first obtaining a pull and then photographing comprising the production upon a carrier capathe pull. It is an object of the invention to disble of passing light, of relatively opaque imprespense with the necessity of employing a camera sions of the type or line matter, preparing from to obtain the paper negative from the pull. In the resulting carrier a photographic contact 35 accordance with the invention a composite posiprint on sensitised paper, thereby to secure a tive transparency containing both pictorial and paper negative of the type or line matter, comline or type matter for use in the production of bining with the said print, by planning, a paper photogravure and rotogravure printing forms, is negative of the pictorial matter, thereby to obprepared by producing upon a transparent or tain a composite paper negative, and photo- 40 translucent carrier, relatively opaque impressions graphing the said composite negative on to a of the type or line matter, and preparing from sensitised transparent base which gives the comthe resulting carrier a contact print on sensiposite positive transparency. tised paper, thereby to secure a paper negative A Process for preparing a composite p e of the type or line matter. 3. A process for preparing a composite positive transparency containing both pictorial and line or type matter for use in the production of photogravure and rotogravure printing forms, comprising the production typographically upon a transparent carrier of relatively opaque impressions of the line or type matter, preparing from the resulting carrier a photographic contact print on sensitised paper, thereby to secure a paper negative of the line or type matter, combining with the said print, by planning, a paper negative of the pictorial matter, thereby obtaining a composite paper negative, and photographing the said negative on to a sensitised transparent plate to produce the composite positive transparency.
4. A process for preparing a composite positive transparency containing both pictorial and line or type matter for use in the production of photogravure and rotogravure printing forms, comprising the production on a transparent carrier of relatively opaque impressions of the line or type matter, preparing from the resulting carrier a photographic contact print on tinted sensitised paper, thereby securing a paper negative in which the line or type matter appears light on a dark background, combining with the said print, by planning, a paper negative of the pictorial matter which also appears light on dark background, thereby to provide a composite paper negative, and photographing this negative on to a sensitised transparent base which is developed to provide the desired composite positive transparency.
