Abstract

844,695. Photo-mechanical printing surfaces. DITTO Inc. Nov. 21, 1956 [Nov. 21, 1955], No. 35553/56. Class 98(2) [Also in Group XVI] A method of preparing a master printing sheet comprises forming an assembly of sheets in contact with each other, the sheets comprising an original imaged sheet having text or design portions adapted to absorb heat in contact with a second sheet having a fusible coating thereon, exposing the surface of the original sheet to infra-red radiation to cause portions of the fusible coating corresponding to the text or design to adhere to the original sheet, and separating the sheets. The method is applicable to the production of master sheets for use in spirit duplicating processes, hectographic processes, and planographic or lithographic processes, the coating on the second sheet being chosen in accordance with the process for which the master to be prepared is to be used. As shown, the imaged original sheet 1 with the imaged side facing outwards is clamped, together with the second sheet 3 having a coating 4, on a cylinder 6 and rotated past a slot 9 in a member 8 beneath which is an infra-red source 10. The source 10 preferably has an intensity of 1,350 watts and is placed 1/16 inch from the surface of the original sheet. The rotation of the cylinder is such that the exposure time is 1/10 second. On removing the second sheet from the original sheet the back of the original sheet has imaged portions which correspond to and are a mirrorimage of the original image on the front of the sheet. The back of the sheet 1 may then be used as a master sheet for direct printing as in a spirit duplicating process. When the master is to be used in offset printing processes a direct reading image may be obtained by placing the original sheet face downwards on the sheet 3. Instead of a master sheet, a stencil or negative may be prepared by exposing the original sheet and a sheet coated with a marking medium which is opaque to ultra-violet radiation and yet becomes tacky or liquid when exposed to heat. After exposure the coating will be drawn away on the original sheet leaving a stencil or negative having areas transparent to ultra-violet light and corresponding to the original image and through which a sensitized plate may be exposed.
