Abstract
669,237. Automatic circuit-breakers. HOOVER, Ltd. June 2, 1950. [June 14, 1949] No. 13863/50. Class 38 (v). [Also in Group XXIII] The motor of a portable powerdriven appliance such as a floor polisher is controlled by a switch which is moved "on" by depression of a pedal 13 and is then held "on" against the action of a return spring by the attraction of the field magnet 35 of the motor for an armature 36 so that failure of current causes automatic return to the "off" position. The switch may also be moved "off" by a second depression of the pedal. The switch, Fig. 3, is of the kind in which successive depressions of a button 26 move a pivoted member 27 alternately right and left, thereby operating the contact member alternately "on" and "off" through a dead-centre spring mechanism. In the form shown the button 26 is operated by a bar 19 on the pedal operated member 13 pivoted at 15. The member 27 passes through a hole in a slide 40 urged to the left, i.e. to the "off" position by a spring 42. Operation of the switch "on" therefore by the pedal 13 causes the slide 40 to move to the right and this operates a bell crank lever 38 so as to allow the armature 36 pivoted at 37 to engage and be held by the magnet 35. In a modification, Fig. 6, the left hand position of the slide 40<SP>1</SP> corresponds to the "on" position, and the pedal 13<SP>1</SP> operates a rectilinearly-moving slide 53 which engages the button 26<SP>1</SP> of the switch and also by means of a cam surface 65 rotates a plate 60 pivoted at 61, the plate in turn actuating a member 56 pivoted at 57 and thereby bringing the armature 36<SP>1</SP> up to the magnet 35<SP>1</SP> where it is held. The above movement of the plate 60 allows the switch to close, such movement otherwise being prevented by the interengagement of catches 62, 63 on members 60, 40<SP>1</SP> respectively. In this modification, operation of the pedal 13<SP>1</SP> to open the switch does so without pulling the armature away from the magnet.
