Abstract

Automatic circuit-breakers are closed electromagnetically from a distance by closing a handoperated push-button or equivalent switch which is electromagnetically pulled home, against yielding fixed contacts, thereby relieving the retractive pressure of the contact-member and causing an involuntary slight further depression of the push-button, this depression serving mechanically to de-clutch the push-button from its switch spindle so that the push-button switch cannot be held closed. As shown in Fig. 1, the push-button c is provided with retractive springs and carries pivoted clutch members d which engage with a driving stop e on the rectilinearly-moving spindle a provided with the bridging contactmember b for engagement with the plunger contacts k in the closing circuit of the main circuitbreaker located at a distance. The spindle carries also an armature j which, when the button is pressed so as to close the circuit at k, is drawn up to the electromagnet i energized by the closure of the circuit-breaker. This further movement of the contact spindle while the hand pressure is maintained on the button allows a further involuntary inwards movement thereof, and, in this movement, the clutch members d. engage the fixed stops f and are carried free of the driving connection with the switch spindle so that the switch cannot be maintained closed by hand if the electromagnet is de-energized by the opening of the main distant circuit-breaker or overload.
