A metal hatch cover particularly for ships' 'tween decks comprises a, plurality of sections of which the section A at one, or at each, end of the hatchway is hinged to the deck at 8 so as to be capable of swinging about the hinge into a. substantially vertical position and, abutting the section, a separate rolling section or sections B capable of pivoting up in known manner when rolled to one end after the hinged section A has been upturned. There may be a hinged section A at each end of the hatchway with a rolling section B between them. As shown, the hinged section A is a double member having two sections or leaves 6, 7 hinged together on their underface on an axis parallel to that of the deck hinges 8. The width of each leaf is less than the distance between the 'tween deck 1 and the weather deck 2 making the leaves stowable between the decks. Two lifting cables pass through sheaves 21 on the weather deck coaming, one being attached to an eye 20 on the hinged section A and the other to an eye 25 on the rolling section B which is thus stowed vertically after it has been pulled to one end of the hatchway.
