The cross joints between a plurality of hatch cover sections, e.g. sections 1 and 2, adapted for sliding movement between closed and open position includes abutting faces 9 which incline from the bottom upwards away from the stowing position and brought together when hauled back into the hatch-covering position by means of hooks 24 engaging contact rollers 25. Each cover section is provided with a fore pair of wheels 11 and an aft pair of wheels 12 adapted to engage a runway 13 on each side of the coaming 14, and a pair of pivot rollers or pintles 10. The wheels 11, 12 are mounted on eccentric bushes to facilitate lifting the sections to disengage their contour weather tight sealing strips. A single sustained pull in the cables 7 attached to each side of the section remote from the stowing end moves the sections towards the stowing end where the pivot rollers 10 mount the rising track member 16, forming a continuation of the coaming 14, and the foremost wheels 11 are guided downward by the curved runner ledge 17, tipping the sections into the vertical stowing position. A pair of back haul side cables 20 are employed to unstow the sections which may be interconnected by towing chains 23. Any suitable draining channels may be incorporated with a well and drain hole 27. Cheek plates 28 may be formed on the trailing end to engage a rib 29 on the leading end of an adjacent section.
