Abstract

850,629. Hatch covers. MACGREGOR & CO. (NAVAL ARCHITECTS) Ltd. June 2, 1959 [June 2, 1958], No. 17527/58. Class 113. [Also in Group XXV] In a ship's hatch cover of the kind employing a plurality of cover sections 4, 4a, the sections 4 are hinged to the deck at 12 and are provided with hydraulic cylinders 9 which are carried on the outside of the cover sections in a protected position provided by the overhanging flanges 6, 16 and either a lowered step 3 formed in the hollow deck plating or an upturned lip in the coaming flange. The free end of the cover section 4 is hinged to the section 4a at 13 and the section 4a is provided with wheels 27 to ease its trailing along the deck or coaming. The flange 16 is provided with a webb 15 which forms a link between the ram 9a and the section 4a and a further link 23 joins the ram to the section 4 so that when pressure fluid is applied to the ram the thrust on the end of the link 15 causes the joint 13 to break upwards until the sections reach the stowed positions (indicated by chain dotted lines) when the link sections 15, 16 assume a horizontal position. The overhanging flanges 6, 16 may be provided with screw operated cleats 10 co-operating with cleat stops 11 on the deck structure. The hatch cover may comprise four pairs of sections 4, 4a each pair being connected by drag links and provided with its own hydraulic cylinder 9 which is fed by flexible hydraulic pipes.
