Abstract

1,273,600. Ships &c. KINGSTON MARINE TECHNOLOGY Ltd. 26 Oct., 1970 [6 Dec., 1969], No. 59675/69. Headings B7A, B7S and B7V. A method of beaching and refloating e.g. a landing craft involves the use of rams 15 at the beached end of the vessel. The rams hang freely from pivots 16 and can swing through equal arcs limited by stops, the more nearly vertical position of the rams being that shown in Fig. 1. To refloat when beached, the rams are extended thus raising the end of vessel clear of the beach. Since the bow is floating and the rams are angled, the ship moves forward under its own weight. To beach, further rams may be used to force the supporting rams to pivot to bring the vessel ashore, or the supporting rams may be arranged so that the vessel beaches under its own weight. The two propellers 12 are rotatable for steering and are retractable into a well 13 in the hull to avoid the beach propulsion being continued by hydraulic bow thrust unit 14. Alternatively non-retractable propellers may be provided beneath overhanging sponsors.
