Abstract

1362792 Keels; rudders; hydrofoils A M SIBTHORPE 8 Oct 1971 [21 Oct 1970 25 Jan 1971 13 April 1971] 49982/70 3105/71 and 9278/71 Headings B7S and B7V The keel 10 (Fig. 1b) of a vessel (which may be a hydrofoil craft or an air cushion craft) is fixed to or integral with a shaft 16 which is rotatable about its longitudinal axis in a bearing 18 attached to the hull. The shaft 16 is tilted forwardly and upwardly in, and is canted laterally of. the vessel's fore-and-aft vertical plane in such a way that rotation of the shaft 16 through 90 degrees shifts the keel from its normal deepwater vertical position (Fig. lb) to a retracted position in which the keel 10 lies with its plane transverse to the vertical plane and spaced below the vessel's bottom. Shaft 16 may be power-operated. A bilge keel 70 (Fig. 1d) may be provided; it is attached to a shaft 74 which is rotated by gearing 78, 76 to bring it into position 70a. A rudder may also be provided on a shaft 112 rotatable by tiller 120 which is turned through 180 degrees in the vertical plane and then 180 degrees in horizontal plane in order to move the rudder 110 (full line) to position 110a (broken lines) in which position the draught of the vessel is reduced. The arrangement is such that the rudder is self centring in both positions.
