Abstract

666,333. Steam turbines. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 6, 1950. [Feb. 8, 1949] No. 3445/49. Class 110(iii). In a geared compound steam turbine plant comprising high, intermediate and low-pressure steam turbines 1, 2, 3 respectively which are arranged in series and drive separate shafts inter-connected through a reduction gearing, to an output shaft 7, the turbines 1, 2 each have a main blading stage or set of stages 8, 9 for maximum power and an additional stage or set of stages 11, 12 respectively, through which steam is passed to the main stage, for low power operation of the plant. The turbines are arranged with their longitudinal axes parallel and the turbines 1, 2 are diametrically disposed on either side of, and in the same plane as, the shaft 7. The turbine 3 is carried by the condenser 10 and is positioned above the level of the turbines 1, 2. Valves 13<SP>1</SP>, 21 are interconnected and opened during high power operation to feed the stages 8, 9; the stages 11, 12 being byepassed except for cooling steam. The turbine 3 has astern stages 27 arranged beyond the outlet ends of its two axially opposed ahead stages. The turbines 1, 2 are mounted at their outlet end on the gear casing and on their inlet end on supports provided on the condenser 10.
