657,503. Knitting-machines. STIBBE & CO., Ltd., G., STIBBE, E. V., and WEST, B. H. Aug. 5, 1948, No. 20702. [Class 74 (ii)] Yarn on its way to the needles of a knitting machine can be drawn from its supply at a rate which varies in accordance with variations in yarn tension, by a mechanism which includes a rockable hub 28 carrying wraplocating guides 32, 33, through which the yarn Y travels as it passes on to and off a single positively driven tapered (e.g. frustoconical) take-off roller 20, around the entire periphery of which it is wrapped, and a further guide 34 through which it passes on its way to the feed eye 5. Variation in yarn tension causes the hub to rock, so altering the position of the wrap lengthwise of the roller and hence the rate of take-off. The hub may have an adjustable counterweight 31 and (according to the Provisional Specification) may comprise a container divided into intercommunicating compartments containing mercury. On leaving the package, the yarn first passes through pairs of slotted tensioning discs 11. The roller may be of rubber or the like, or of wood, metal, or a plastic material coated with rubber or with other friction material. According to the Provisional Specification, the hub may bear a further guide, engaging the run of the yarn between the supply and the wrap-locating guides. A dropper guide 35 is released by yarn failure or breakage and closes an electrical circuit to energize an electromagnet which operates a belt striking gear or equivalent stopping means.
