Abstract
650,500. Artificial hands. STEEPER, Ltd., H., and PHILPOTT, W. J. June 4, 1948, No. 15124. [Class 81(ii)] In an artificial hand of the kind in which the digits are opened by a control and are closed automatically, there are provided two linkage systems operable by a single control member, one system opening and closing the digits and the other system being associated with locking means. As shown in Fig. 1 downward movement of cord 12 causes upward movement of pivot 28 which opens the fingers and thumb against force of spring 16. As shown in Fig. 3 downward movement of cord 12 also acts on a second lever system to move a locking member 17 downward and out of contact with a friction pad 18 fixed to the finger assembly: upon release of cord 12, the member 17 jams against pad 18 under the force of spring 16, thus preventing further opening of the fingers.
