561,637. Artificial hands. HOARE, C. G. Jan. 25, 1943, No. 1227. [Class 81 (ii)] Operating mechanism for pivoted thumb and/or finger joints of artificial hands comprises a base block 11, fixed to the body of the hand, a jointmovement operating piece 12 slidable thereon and adapted to be clutched thereto by a oneway friction clutch 19, 21 and an actuating member 13 movable by a flexion cord 25, against a spring 24, for moving the piece 12 in one direction and for releasing the clutch. A pivot plate 9, fixed to the block 11 on the inner surface of the palm of the hand, has rotatably mounted thereon the ring 12 furnished with an arm 15 which, through a link system 14, moves a pin 8 projecting from the thumb-actuating lever 7. The pin 8 also engages a slot in the finger-actuating lever 4. The thumb and fingers, which may be rubber-padded, are respectively pivoted at 6, 3 so that movement of the pin 8 actuates the thumb and fingers to open together or to close together. Upon the ring 12 is rotatably mounted the further ring 13, spring-urged at 24 and carrying an arm 32 to which the flexion element 25 is attached. The plate 9 is formed with a wedge-shaped aperture 19 in which is situated a roller 21 carried by a pivoted arm 22, spring-urged at 23, the aperture 19 and roller 22 forming the friction clutch. Pivotally carried on the arm 32 is a detent 26 and a spring-urged pawl 29. Springs' 20 operate to bias the fingers and thumb to the fully-opened position. When it is desired to re-grip an article, the flexion element is pulled which moves the pawl 29 to trip the clutch thus allowing the fingers and thumb to open under the pull of the springs 20. Further movement of the member 25 causes the detent 26 to fall into the niche 27, thus moving the ring 12 to effect re-grip and also clearing the pawl 29 from the nose 30 of the arm 22. Release of pull in the member 25 will allow the ring 13 to move back to the Fig. 4 position under the pull of the spring 24.
