648,388. Drying-method and apparatus. ILUNE, G. July 22, 1947, No. 19672: Convention date, March 4, 1946. [Class 34(ii)] In a method of drying material by means of a fluid medium within a drying chamber, only the difference between the vapour pressure of the fluid to be eliminated in the material and the vapour pressure of this same fluid in the drying medium surrounding the material is varied while all other factors, temperature of the drying medium now of -this medium through the chamber and the quantity of fluid removed from the material per unit of time are kept constant. As shown, drying apparatus comprises a gas-tight chamber enclosing the material to be dried, a closed circuit by means of which the drying medium is circulated through the chamber, a heater being disposed between a circulating blower and the chamber, the latter having a safety valve. arranged so that the pressure only slightly exceeds external atmospheric pressure. A condenser is inserted in the circuit for separating from the drying medium as it leaves the chamber a constant quantity of fluid per unit of time, the condensed liquid being removed through a siphon and passing through a flowmeter which controls the condenser by acting on the flow of the cooling water.
