Abstract

540,716. Conditioning grain. FORSTER, jun., T. E. Jan. 29, 1940, No. 6258/41. Divided out of 540,679. [Class 58] Cool grain is treated with steam in a closed chamber, then water is applied to the grain to cool it by evaporation without lessening the amount of water absorbed by the grain by condensation of steam thereon. The evaporation may be facilitated by subjecting the grain, with the cooling water thereon, to the action of air currents. The process may be continuous, the grain passing from a steam chamber to a cooling chamber, and may be performed in the apparatus described in Specification 540,179. A desired increase in the weight of the grain due to absorbed moisture may be obtained by ascertaining the increase of weight for a given rise of temperature of the grain, and then increasing the temperature proportionately. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 29/04 and 277,142, [both in Class 58].
