Abstract
473,842. Tobacco. THERMAL ENGINEERING CORPORATION. April 20, 1936, Nos. 11255, 11256, and 11257. Convention dates, Oct. 9, 1935, Dec. 14, 1935, and March 28, 1936. [Class 130] To moisten it and exterminate organisms therein, tobacco in a chamber is subjected to a high vacuum and then treated with steam. The vacuum is reduced by the steam but is subsequently increased to evaporate the moisture and cool the tobacco to a temperature below that at which heat deterioration or discoloration takes place. Hogsheads 4 of tobacco are enclosed in a bell 1 which is exhausted through a valve 18 by a pump or multistage steam evacuator E. The valve 18 is then closed and low pressure steam is admitted through a valve 6. The quantity of steam delivered is measured by an integrating fluid meter or by a metering device 7. Preferably 20-30 per cent excess of steam above that required to moisten the tobacco to a predetermined extent is added and the excess is removed by the final vacuum which is less than the initial vacuum and reduces the temperature below 125‹ F. If it is desired to store the tobacco all the moisture supplied by the steam is evaporated.
