Abstract
245,671. Flach, J. July 2, 1925. Preserving fruit, vegetables, &c.-Fruit, vegetables, &c. are preserved by first treating with a germ-killing gas and then with fresh sterile inactive gas, such as nitrogen, the moisture content of which is controlled according to the condition of the substance under treatment. In the example described, after the treatment with the germ-killing gas, the inactive gas is introduced through conduits g, h into the chamber a containing fruit e on permeable trays or shelves b. Dry inactive gas, which may however contain a small amount of moisture, passes in through conduit g, and inactive gas moistened by steam through conduit h, the amount of each gas admitted being regulated by valves g', h<1> controlled through electrical connections bv the pointer z of a hygrometer m in the chamber a. Circulation of the gas is effected by fans c, d as shown. The gas passes out of the chamber though an opening o controlled by a valve f. Alternatively the admission of gas may be manually controlled.
