18,041. Powell, W. Aug. 9. Impregnating - compositions; wood, treating with liquids.-Wood is seasoned &c. by immersing it in a' saccharine solution at 120-140‹ F. until it is warmed throughout, then gradually raising the temperature of the solution to about boiling - point, maintaining this temperature until the wood is sufficiently cooked, allowing the solution to cool to about 140‹ F., removing the wood at this temperature, and drying naturally or artificially. When dried artificially, the wood is transferred to a drying - chamber at about 140‹ F. and containing air with about 80 or 90 per cent of moisture. The temperature of the chamber is gradually raised to about 180-220‹ F. and the moisture in the air is then reduced to about 20 per cent. The cooling of the solution to about 140‹ F. may be effected by introducing cold solution, which is thereby warmed for treating the next lot of wood. The saccharine solution may contain a metallic salt, such as a salt of arsenic.
