Abstract
109,584. Benjamin, G. H. April 4, 1917. Hops are dried on shelves or in rotary drums or in dehydrating apparatus of any suitable construction by successive treatments with heated air of increasing temperature. In the first stage partially-dried air at about 120‹ F. is used for from one to three hours. The next stage lasts from two to five hours, the air being between 140‹ F. and 165‹ F. The hops may be finally heated to about 170‹ F. for thirty minutes to an hour, preferably by radiation from electric coils. &c. Sulphurous acid or other gas is also used during the drying as usual. The temperature and periods may be varied. The process is stated to dehydrate without desiccating the hops.
