Abstract

1304407 Drying foodstuffs; heat pumps TERMOELECTRONICA GENIA LIMITADA 11 May 1970 [12 May 1969] 22700/70 Headings F4G and F4H Foodstuffs are dried in a chamber (not shown) by passing heated air (e.g. at 25‹ C. and 40% relative himidity) in a closed system around them, the air being heated by a heat pump system which utilizes the latent heat of condensation of the water vapour carried by the air and removed from the foodstuff during drying. Wet air A<SP>1</SP> (80% R.H.) leaving the drying chamber is cooled below its dew-point (15À3‹ C.) by drawing it through an evaporator E of the heat pump system by means of a blower V, so that the latent heat of condensation is supplied to the working fluid of the system to vaporize it, and water is removed at E<SP>1</SP>. The air (at 11À5‹ C. and 95% R.H.) is then passed through the condenser C of the system where it absorbs the latent heat of condensation of the working fluid, and attains its drying condition (25‹ C. and 40% R.H.). Since the air circulates in a closed system, the temperature tends to rise and the relative humidity to fall as drying proceeds. The temperature of the air is automatically controlled by means of a thermostat T in the air stream which controls solenoid valves Sp and Sa to divert the gaseous working fluid through an alternative condenser C<SP>1</SP> (exposed to the atmosphere) when the air temperature rises. The relative humidity of the air is automatically controlled by means of a hydrostat H g which controls a solenoid valve Sg to pass some gaseous working fluid to the evaporator thus raising the temperature thereof (and hence the relative humidity of the air), when the relative humidity falls. A dehydrating filter F, an expansion valve X, and a needle valve H, are provided.
