[Class 83 (iv)] In a method of mounting wheels on axles of less than three inches diameter, the bore of the wheel hub d is made with a taper of halfangle less than thirty minutes and the axle g is forced in under pressure so that the stress in the assembled hub and or axle is close to the elastic limit. The hub may be of greater width than the spokes L so as to leave an end portion o of greater elasticity. Either the interior of the hub or the exterior of the axle may be formed with longitudinal, helical or criss-cross ribs k. As shown by the development of the interior of the bore in Fig. 16, additional short ribs t may be provided at one end to act as locking means when the axle is pressed in from that side. Alternatively, the ribs may be widened at the entry end of the bore. The form of projections shown in Fig. 18 affords a locking effect at each end. The outer end of the bore may be countersunk and the end of the axle riveted over.
