Abstract
636,624. Generating combustion products under pressure. POWER JETS (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT), Ltd., LLOYD, P., SHILLING, W. F., BOULTER, R. A. and BROWN, J. Aug. 11, 1947, No. 22241. [Class 51 (i)] In a combustion chamber for gas-turbines a stream of air is introduced into the radially-outermost zone with a velocity sufficiently near to that of the gas in that zone as to form an envelope of cooling air which is maintained as a separate non-turbulent flow. This air is introduced through an annular passage between walls la, 7. The chamber includes a stabilizing cup 3 and primary air is introduced between swirl vanes 10 and through holes 11, 12. Other air passes between walls 1, 2 and enters the chamber through holes 25. Some air passes through throttling holes in a ring 26 and enters the chamber through holes 13 or 14 with a velocity insufficient to penetrate the gas stream. Alternatively, the downstream end of the wall 1 may be formed of metal gauze or of porous material such as sintered metal. The passage beyond the ring 26 is of decreasing cross-section. The holes 25 may be covered by a shield as described in Specification 636,623. According to the Provisional Specification additional air may be introduced through annular gaps between overlapping sections of the chamber wall. The layer of these sections may be crimped so as to fit on to the other. Specification 599,257 also is referred to.
