Abstract

A depilatory comprises a mercaptan combined with a chemically equivalent amount of a base having an ionisation constant sufficient to give effective depilatory action to the mercaptan, and a free organic base. The preferred base is guanidine and the preferred mercaptan is thioglycollic acid. The depilatory may be in pre-emulsion form or an aqueous emulsion. Anionic emulsifying agents which may be used are salts of sulphated fatty alcohols, but non-ionic agents are preferred. Fat or wax-like bodies may be added, e.g., sorbitan monostearate plus polyoxyalkylene sorbitan monostearate; and borax plus beeswax with polyoxyalkylene sorbitan monostearate. Hydrated alumina, water soluble or dispersible polyvinyl alcohol, starch tetra acetate, sodium starch glycollate, bentonite, alginates, cellulose ethers or the sodium salt of carboxy methyl amylopectin and cellulose esters. Bile acid salts, hydrazine sulphate, hexamethylene di-isocyanate, other di- or tri-isocyanates or n-propenyl allophanate may be added and also wetting agents such as the sulphated or sulphonated compounds of alkylnaphthalenes or dibasic acid esters, sulphated or sulphonated amides, polymerised polyglycol esters and fatty acid amide derivatives.
