Abstract

The formation in air of dust or its removal therefrom, caused in mining, rock drilling and many industries, is prevented or effected by either subjecting the air containing dust to the action of a finely divided aqueous solution containing a small proportion of each of a nonsoapy anionic surface active substance and of a water-soluble mucilage or like adhesive substance or treating working surfaces capable of giving rise to dust with such a finely divided solution. The dusty atmosphere of mines &c. may be sprayed with the solution; working faces and the tools used may be sprayed therewith, and the solution may be used in wet drilling of rock. The surface active substances comprise water-soluble salts of organic compounds in which a hydrocarbon radical is linked directly with a sulphated or sulphonated solubilizing group or through an ester, amide or aryl linkage. Suitable groups of substances comprise salts of sulphonated or sulphated primary aliphatic alcohols of at least 8 carbon atoms derived from fatty acid sources; salts of sulphonated or sulphated secondary aliphatic alcohols of at least 8 carbon atoms derived from synthetic sources such as petroleum and particularly sulphated compounds obtained from olefines derived from cracked paraffin wax as in Specifications 459,078, 459,079, 459,080, 459,117, [all in Group IV], and 478,841; salts of isethionic acid or of taurine condensation products with fatty acids and salts of alkyl-aryl or keryl-aryl sulphonates. The preferred compounds specified comprise salts of sulphated aliphatic alcohols containing 8 to 22 carbon atoms in the molecule such as those known under the Registered Trade Marks "Teepol" and "Gardinol," and also the materials similarly known as "Nacconal," "Aerosol O.T." and "Igepon T." The mucilages are preferably water-soluble alginates or alginate-containing materials such as mucilages from species of laminaria. Other water-soluble or dispersable mucilages or gelatinous substances may be used such as alkaline casein, gums such as gum arabic or tragacanth, methyl cellulose, starch, dextrine, saponins and licorice extracts, beet sugar residues, gelatins and fish glues, blood, or sufficiently adhesive waste industrial liquors such as spent sulphite liquor. The solution may be sprayed in conjunction with a non-inflammable substance where there is danger from inflammable dust. The solution may contain an anti-corrosive agent, such as sodium silicate, to reduce corrosion of drilling tools etc.; or a mucilage stabilizing agent.
