Abstract
An aqueous blood adhesive used in the manufacture of plywood, comprises a substance capable of supplying magnesium ions, a substance capable of supplying cobalt ions and/or chromium ions, e.g. the sulphates and chlorides of magnesium cobalt and chromium, and a substance for rendering the adhesive alkaline, e.g. sodium and calcium hydroxides, sodium silicate or mixture thereof. The ions, which are preferably supplied as water-soluble metal salts, may be added in the dry or solution state to dry blood or to neutral or alkaline blood solutions. Defoaming agents, e.g. N-amyl or octyl alcohol and pine oil, and phenolformaldehyde resin may be present. The examples disclose aqueous blood compositions comprising: (2) magnesium and cobalt chloride hexahydrate and sodium hydroxide; (4) magnesium chloride hexahydrate, chromic sulphate and sodium hydroxide; (6) wood flour, pine oil (as defoamer), calcium and sodium hydroxides, sodium silicate, magnesium chloride hexahydrate, and cobalt sulphate mono-hydrate; (7) wheat flour, wood flour, sander dust, magnesium chloride hexahydrate, cobalt sulphate monohydrate, calcium and sodium hydroxides, and phenol-formaldehyde resin. Comparisons are made with adhesives containing substances supplying magnesium, cobalt and chromium ions singly.ALSO:An aqueous blood adhesive used in the manufacture of plywood comprises a substance capable of supplying magnesium ions, a substance capable of supplying cobaltand/or chromium ions, e.g. the sulphates and chlorides of magnesium cobalt and chromium, and a substance for rendering the adhesive alkaline, e.g. sodium and calcium hydroxides, sodium silicate or mixtures thereof. The ions, which are preferably added as water-soluble metal salts, may be added in the dry or solution state to dry blood or to neutral or alkaline blood solutions. Example VII discloses aqueous blood composition comprising wheat flour, wood flour, sander dust, magnesium chloride hexahydrate, cobalt sulphate monohydrate, calcium and sodium hydroxides and phenolformaldehyde resin.ALSO:An aqueous blood adhesive used in the manufacture of plywood comprises a substance capable of supplying magnesium ions, a substance capable of supplying cobalt and/or chromium ions, e.g. the sulphates and chlorides of magnesium, cobalt and chrominum, and a substance for rendering the adhesive alkaline, e.g. sodium and calcium hydroxides, sodium silicate or mixture thereof.
