Abstract

An adhesive for paper, &c., consists of a suspension of ungelatinised starch in a solution in water of a carboxy-methyl cellulose salt, e.g. sodium salt, to which an amount of a solution of an aluminium salt, e.g. sulphate, nitrate, chloride or acetate, in water has been added which increases the viscosity of the solution but is not sufficient to cause an aluminium salt of carboxy-methyl cellulose to flocculate completely. A suitable concentration of aluminium salt produces between 0,002 and 0,007 gm. equivalents of aluminium per gram of dissolved carboxy-methyl cellulose salt. In described experiments a solution of 8 gms. of sodium carboxy-methyl cellulose in 800 c.c. was made up to a litre by adding aluminium sulphate solution of varying concentrations and the stability of suspensions was measured after the addition of 160 gms. potato flour starch per litre of suspension agent. Suitable adhesive contains between 100 and 220 gms. of starch per litre of suspension agent, and may incorporate fillers such as clay, ground gypsum and ground chalk. In all cases no addition of strongly alkaline agent such as alkali hydroxide is required. Specification 474,583 is referred to.
