Abstract

The tendency of a primary initiating explosive composition containing lead azide and/or lead styphnate to adhere to press punches is reduced by including in the composition molybdenum disulphide. Preferably, the MoS2 is of average size less than 20 microns and is present in an amount of 0.1 to 4% by weight of the composition. The composition may be made by dispersing MoS2 with the aid of a wetting agent in an aqueous gelatine solution, and running simultaneously into this solution an aqueous solution of lead nitrate and an aqueous solution containing sodium azide and Rochelle salt; MoS2 is bound within the precipitated lead azide crystals. Dextrin may be used in place of gelatine, and the sodium azide solution may contain caustic soda. Lead styphnate may be similarly prepared by precipitation in an aqueous solution of a colloid in the presence of a dispersion of MoS2.ALSO:The tendency of a primary initiating explosive composition containing lead azide and/or lead styphnate to adhere to press punches is reduced by including in the composition molybdenum disulphide.
