Abstract

1,132,576. X-ray contrast agents. MALLINCKRODT CHEMICAL WORKS. 26 Nov., 1965, No. 50458/65. Heading A5B. An X-ray contrast composition comprises BaSO 4 and a non-toxic fluidizing agent which is a water-dispersible colloidal anionic ether or ester derivative of a low molecular weight polymer glucan or a salt thereof (e.g. sodium CMC, sodium dextran sulphate or other starch derivatives), a 2% W/W aqueous solution of which at 25‹C has a viscosity not above 50 centipoises and which is present in an amount within the range 0.04 to 1.0 gm. per 100 gms. of BaSO 4 . Carrageenin and other conventional additives, e.g. polyhydric alcohols, wetting agents and antifoaming agents, may also be present. The compositions may be prepared dry and used for the extemporaneous preparation of aqueous suspensions for radiographic purposes.
