Abstract

545,409. Urea-formaldehyde adhesives. AERO RESEARCH Ltd., and RAYNER, C. A. A. Feb. 14, 1940, No. 2849. [Class 2 (iii)] A method of producing adhesive condensation syrups by refluxing together, in slightly acid solution, a mixture of formaldehyde and urea, thio-urea or a mixture thereof, is characterized, by the addition to the mixture, prior to refluxing, of at least 2 per cent. by weight of a substantially neutral non-buffering ionizable salt, or salts, excluding alkaline earth chlorides. Specified added salts are the nitrate, sulphate, chloride, bromide or iodide of sodium or potassium, calcium nitrate and magnesium sulphate. A buffer solution is added to the mixture to maintain a constant pH value during refluxing. After refluxing, a stabilizing agent, such as sodium acetate, may be added, and the mixture evaporated until the desired viscosity is obtained. Starch may be added to the evaporated syrup.
