Abstract

536,493. Urea-formaldehyde adhesives. AERO RESEARCH, Ltd., and RAYNER, C. A. A. Nov. 9, 1939, No. 29772. [Class 2 (iii)] An adhesive composition comprises a condensation product of formaldehyde with urea, thio-urea or a mixture thereof, and formic acid in excess of 2 per cent. by weight. Filling material may be incorporated, and specified fillers are starch, calcium sulphate, Tripoli silica powder, and cellulosic materials such as wood flour and paper pulp. The condensation product may be obtained bv boiling 1 mol. of urea with 2-2¢ mols. of formaldehyde, in aqueous solution, and the formic acid should be incorporated immediately before applying the adhesive mixture. A retarding agent, such as hexamine or ammonia, may be added to the formic acid. According to the Provisional Specification, a small proportion of ammonium chloride may be incorporated with the formic acid.
