Abstract

Vinyl chloride is polymerized in aqueous suspension with the aid of an initiator in a medium having a pH below 7 and containing a combination of less than 1% by wt. of the water of each of (i) polyvinyl alcohol; (ii) a water-soluble oxygen-containing organic wetting agent and (iii) an alkali metal sulphate, chloride or phosphate or an alkaline earth metal or magnesium chloride. Comonomers specified are mixtures of vinyl acetate with vinyl laurate, maleic acid esters of acrylic acid esters. Wetting agents specified are alkyl sulphonic acids, alkyl and alkyl-naphthalene sulphonates, alkyl sulphates, salts of fatty acids, protein-fatty acid condensation products, alkyl-aryl polyglycol ethers, fatty amino-oxyethylates, polyacrylates, phthalates, benzoates and abietates. All the ionic agents are used in the form of their alkali or alkaline-earth metal salts. In the examples dilauryl peroxide is used as initiator. In Example 1 components (ii) and (iii) are sodium lauryl sulphate and calcium chloride and in Example 2 the partial sulphonation product of crude wax and sodium paraffin sulphonate and sodium sulphate. In Example 2 the effect of a pH of 3 set with phosphoric acid is contrasted with a pH of 8 set with NaOH.
