Abstract

Wool or other proteinaceous materials of animal origin such as hair, fur, feathers or untanned skins, are bleached with an aqueous solution of alkali metal or alkaline earth chlorite brought to a pH from 4 to 5 by previous acidification, the value of the pH being maintained during the operation, if necessary, by the presence of a buffer, e.g. acetic acid. A wetting agent may be added to the solution, e.g. a fatty acid ester of polyglycol or polyglycerol or an alkyl sulphonate. For the treatment of wool the preferred wetting agents are sodium oleylsulphonate, octylphenoxy (8) glycol of the formula CH3(CH2)7C6H4O(CH2CH2 O)7CH2-CH2OH, octylsulphophthalate and triethanolamine. In the examples, degreased wool, a rabbit's skin, degummed silk and depilated calf skin are bleached.
