Abstract

A composition which may be used as an orthopaedic plaster, a modelling plaster, or for taking dental impressions, comprises plaster of Paris and sodium or potassium alginate, an antiferment, and a setting inhibitor, the weight ratio of inorganic substance to dry alginate being 30 : 1 to 70 : 1. The antiferment may be formaldehyde, and the setting inhibitor sodium silicate, sodium lactate, or sodium phosphate. In examples the plaster is added in required proportions to:-Example I sodium silicate 0.4 to 0.6 per cent., alginate powder 4-6, water 89-94, perfume 0.04-0.05, formol 0.01 to 0.03, and Example II, sodium carbonate 2-7 per cent., formol 0.04-0.05, sodium alginate 4-6, balance water and perfume.
