Abstract

An increase in volume of 0.5 to 5 per cent is obtained in concrete by adding 0.006-0.04 per cent, relative to the cement, of aluminium powder together with a further substance which causes the concrete to set before expansion ceases. The further substance may act both as a setting accelerator and as a retarder of the reaction between the aluminium, cement and water, e.g. calcium chloride. The rate of expansion can be increased by adding an alkali. Other additions are a wetting agent and a non-reactive dry granular substance, the latter in an amount 25 to 1,000 times the weight of aluminium powder. Specification 445,628 is referred to.
