Abstract

Light weight mortar or concrete is produced by aeration of a cement mix containing a foaming agent, bentonite being added to stabilize the foam. Combined foaming and stabilizing agents for addition, e.g. as an aqueous paste, to hydraulic cement mixes comprise 1/2 to 15 parts by weight of bentonite to 1 part of saponin. Mixtures added as pastes may include glycerine and/or alcohol. Powdered alkaline substances may be added with the bentonite, e.g. borax or sodium bicarbonate. Other conventional additives, e.g. calcium chloride or other accelerator may be included in the cement mix, and sintered clay or exfoliated vermiculite may be used as aggregate when very light products are desired.
