A cementing agent comprises cement, a surface-active substance selected from alkyl sulphonates, aryl sulphonates, alkylaryl sulphonates, and resin soaps, 0À005-2 wt. per cent of a cellulose ether and/or ester, and, optionally, powdered stone provided that if no powdered stone is included the cementing agent consists of at least 99À6% cement, 0À005-0À35% cellulose ether and/or ester and 0À005-0À2% surfaceactive agent. Suitable cellulose ethers and esters are methyl, ethyl and hydroxyethyl celluloses and cellulose glycollates. The cementing agents can comprise 80 parts by wt. Portland cement and 20 parts powdered stone and can be mixed with 3-9 volumes of sand to form mortars for rendering and brickwork.
