Abstract

Concrete, mortar or like cementitious material is mixed with a small amount of stable wetting agent, the mixing is continued until a spontaneous change occurs in the mix (the mix suddenly becoming coherent and somewhat plastic), and the mix is then extruded to form kerbs, bricks, &c. The wetting agent may be (a) an incomplete wetting agent, such as saponifiable oil or free fatty or resinic acid, becoming complete only when it reacts with the alkaline material in the concrete etc.; or (b) a complete wetting agent such as "Cheecol" (Registered Trade Mark for sulphated fatty alcohols), sulphated lauryl alcohol or alkyl naphthalene sulphonates; the amount used may be 0.1-0.15 per cent by weight of the cement in the mix. The time of mixing may be 4-5 minutes. Specifications 184,555, [Class 87 (ii)], 391,582, 395,283 and 546,645 are referred to.
