Abstract

Coating compositions comprising polyvinyl acetate and plaster of Paris in proportions not exceeding 1:1,9 by weight are prepared by a method which comprises mixing the polyvinyl acetate and the plaster of Paris with water whilst constantly stirring, stopping the stirring to allow the hydration reaction of the plaster of Paris to proceed under rising temperature conditions, and stirring the reacted mixture again as soon as the temperature has reached its maximum. The water to which the polymer and plaster are added may contain a small amount of swollen hydroxymethyl cellulose and pigments. Pigments, e.g. calcium carbonate and titanium dioxide, are preferably added before the plaster of Paris whereas plasticizers, e.g. dibutylphthalate and hexylene glycol, are preferably added at the end of the mixing operation. The compositions may be used for coating walls and floors.
