Abstract

Aqueous emulsions of natural or synthetic rubbers are converted into solid products by adding hydrated fillers in amounts lower than those necessary to combine with the water in the emulsion in stoichiometric proportions. Specified fillers are calcium sulphate, cement and calcium oxide. The amount of filler used varies with the type of plasticizer, emulsifier and other fillers which may also be present as well as with their particle size. The emulsion may contain subtances which form films with the hydrating fillers. The hydrated filler may be incorporated in the emulsion by stirring while mixed with a water-soluble binding agent e.g. shellac. Specified rubbers are natural rubber butyl rubber, polychlorobutadiene, polyisobutylene and butadiene-styrene and butadiene acrylonitrile rubbers.
