Abstract

The time of setting of calcined gypsum plaster is stabilized by mixing nitre cake with sufficient calcined gypsum to produce a dry product which will not deliquesce, the mix being subsequently added to a further amount of calcined gypsum and a retarder to obtain a commercial plaster. The mixing may be effected in any conventional grinding or mixing apparatus at normal or raised temperature. The amount of gypsum may amount to 10-200 per cent. of the nitre cake, depending on the moisture content. In an example, calcined gypsum containing 5.3 per cent. of water is mixed with an equal amount of nitre cake, and 15 lbs. of the mixture are then incorporated with 2,000 lbs. of gypsum and 9 lbs. of a nitrogenous retarder.
