Abstract

<PICT:0717109/IV (a)/1> Moulded boards &c. are made from glass filaments &c. more than 1/4 -inch long and, e.g. up to 10 per cent. of the product, together with a cement powder, e.g. Portland, gypsum, or magnesium oxychloride or-oxysulphate, and a synthetic resin, e.g. in proportions 30 to 95 parts of cement to 5 to 70 of resin. The resin may be an amide-aldehyde, e.g. urea-, or melamine-aldehyde, condensate and some of the water of condensation may aid in setting the cement. Hydrolyzed keratin may be included as a retarder for gypsum cement, and hydrochloric or sulphuric acid, or ammonium-, tin-, zinc-, iron-, or aluminium chloride as a resinification catalyst, and sodium bisulphate, -chloride, -sulphate, or-acetate as a seeding agent for the gypsum, and zinc stearate as a lubricant. The mixture may be compressed between dies at 500 to 5,000 lbs. per sq. in. pressure and at 220-300 DEG F. to cure the resin &c. and hydration may be completed by immersion in water for 8 to 24 hours. The composition may be foamed, e.g. using sodium, potassium or ammonium salts of alkyl sulphonic acids to produce a highly porous product.
