Abstract

275,772. Sargint, A. M., and Crowe, G. W. July 9, 1926. Plastic compositions containing soluble silicates; metals &c.-Compositions suitable for use as paints, plasters, cements, putty, &c. consist of zinc or magnesium oxide or both, a soluble silicate, and a powdered metal, such as aluminium, zinc, brass, bronze, copper, nickel, or tin. To accelerate setting a basic lead compound, e.g. a mixture of litharge and white lead, may be added. The soluble silicate is preferably a sodium silicate containing sodium oxide and silica in the ratio 1: 3 and having a specific gravity of 1.29. A typical composition consists of 10 lb of tin, 9 oz of zinc oxide, 1 oz of litharge and white lead mixture (3: 1), and sufficient sodium silicate solution to give the desired consistency.
