Abstract

A dry composition comprises (a) a water-soluble condensate of an aldehyde containing not more than 7 carbon atoms with a phenol, urea or melamine, (b) 20 to 80% by weight of (a) of a water-soluble alkali metal silicate and (c) up to 500% by weight of (a) + (b) of a solid, inorganic, water-insoluble filler. The dry composition may be mixed with water to give a viscous coating or adhesive composition. The composition may also contain an ammonium salt, acid or alkali as catalyst for the resin. Specified fillers are mica, asbestos, quartz, clays, silica, various cements, zinc oxide, gypsum and calcium carbonate which latter acts as a foaming agent in compositions of low pH. When the composition is mixed with water the pH is preferably 6 to 8.5 and a buffer such as sodium phosphate may be included; immediately prior to use an alkali may be added to raise the pH above 9 to accelerate setting. Coating compositions.-The aqueous compositions may be used to coat building boards of absorbent material such as asbestos, asbestos-cement or plaster boards. If less water is used than is necessary to dissolve all the soluble ingredients the coating will have an affinity for waer-based paints. These may also be used as plastering compositions.ALSO:Coating compositions comprises (a) a water-soluble condensate of an aldehyde containing not more than 7 carbon atoms with a phenol, urea or melamine, (b) 20 to 80% by weight of (a) of a water-soluble alkali metal silicate and (c) up to 500% by weight of (a) + (b) of a solid, inorganic, water-insoluble filler.
