632,796. Surface-grinding machines. SOC. ANON. A.B.G., and SOC. CIVILE D'ETUDES DES INVENTIONS ET PROCEDES PHILIPPE. Aug. 28, 1946, No. 25850. Convention date, March 1, 1945. [Class 60] In a surface grinder having a grinding-wheel carried by a movable head and driven by an electric motor, the motor is located on a part of the machine other than the movable head, and the latter is supported on antifriction rollers. In one form, Figs. 1 and 3, a vertically movable, counterweighted slide 2 carries a bed 5, U-shaped in cross-section, which is fitted with rails 22, 22a for rollers 17, 17a and 18, 18a supporting a movable head 6 in which is mounted the spindle 16 of a grinding-wheel 15. The head is guided and located by blocks 23, 23a and 24, 24a engaging the side and bottom faces of the rails. The motor 7 is resiliently suspended from the slide 2 and drives by means of a belt 10 and pulleys 8, 9 a splined bush 11 mounted in bearings in a central portion 14 of the bed, the spindle 16 having a splined end slidable in the bush to allow movement of the head. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), the grinding-wheel spindle is connected by a resilient disc coupling to a shaft having a splined end slidable in the bush.
