Abstract

1,049,468. Grinding. UNITED STATES ELECTRICAL TOOL CO. Sept. 2, 1964 [Sept. 10, 1963], No. 35932/64. Heading B3D. A grinding machine has a driving motor with a fixed diameter pulley on its shaft connected by a belt to a variable diameter pulley on the shaft of a grinding wheel and means for moving the grinding wheel shaft away from the motor shaft to increase the speed of the grinding wheel shaft to compensate for wear of the grinding wheel. A tool and hand rest 31 is mounted in fixed position on a grinding machine. A grinding wheel 18 is fixed on a shaft 15 mounted in bearings in a housing 17 having a base-plate 22 movable on ways 23 on the machine bed 11 by a screw 28 operated by a hand wheel 29. A variable diameter pulley 26, having halves 20a, 20b urged together by springs 20d, 20c, is fixed on the shaft 15 and connected by a belt 21 to a fixed diameter pulley 13 on the shaft of a motor 12 mounted on the bed 11. With an unworn grinding wheel, and the base-plate 22 abutting a stop 26, the belt 21 rides at the extreme outer periphery of the pulley 20. As the grinding wheel wears, hand wheel 29 is operated to move the grinding wheel 18 towards the rest 31 so as to maintain the correct spacing; the halves of the pulley 20 separate, permitting the belt 21 to ride closer to the shaft 15, whereby the speed of the latter is increased to maintain the peripheral speed of the grinding wheel constant. In a modification, Fig. 4, the motor 12 is moved in the same direction as, but to a lesser extent than, the grinding wheel. The motor 12 has legs 32 riding in the ways 23 which extend all the way across the bed 11. The motor 12 is moved by a screw 33 coupled at 34 to the screw 28 and having a lower pitch than the screw 28.
