Abstract

1455746 Centreless grinding SUNDSTRAND SYRACUSE 1 May 1974 [4 May 1973] 19048/74 Heading B3D [Also in Division G3] A centreless grinding machine includes an input section 10 with workpiece feed wheels 15, 16, a grinding station 11 with a grinding wheel or belt 50 driven by a motor 53, and an output section 12 with feed wheels 40, 41. A workpiece may be supported against the grinding wheel 50 by an adjustable blade 55, and is fed through the machine by a regulating wheel 57 driven by a hydraulic motor 62. Feed wheels 15, 16, 40, 41 are also hydraulically driven by motors 30, 44. In operation, the current taken by motor 53 is measured and compared with a desired value set by a computer to produce a signal which adjusts the workpiece feed-rate by varying the speed of the motors 62, 30, 44, or by changing the helix angle of the wheels 57, 15, 16, 40, 41. For this purpose, the shafts of the feed wheels are mounted in yokes 25 which can be tilted by rods 35 connected to hydraulic rams 36, and the mounting of wheel 57 can be tilted by a motor 63.
