Abstract

852,407. Grinding. LUKE & SPENCER Ltd. May 9, 1958 [May 10, 1957], No. 14855/57. Class 60. A grinding machine having a stepless variable speed drive for its grinding wheel and control means for the variable speed drive is characterised by a workrest carried by a first screwthreaded member in engagement with a second screw-threaded member, relative rotation between said screw-threaded members causing movement of the workrest towards or away from the grinding wheel to permit workpiece adjustment in accordance with the diameter of the grinding wheel, and causing, also, corresponding adjustment of the control means. The grinding wheel 8, Fig. 1, is driven by an electric motor 15 through a belt and expanding pulleys 14, 16, the workrest 5 is adjustable towards the grinding wheel by a screwed spindle 9 coupled by a flexible drive 13 to means for adjusting the pulleys, in a modification, the spindle 9 is coupled hydraulically to the pully-adjusting means. In a further modification, Fig. 2, the workrest 5 is adjusted by a shaft 25 carrying a sprocket 27 driving a nut 24 ; the shaft 25 also carries sprockets 29, 30 for effecting adjustment of the expanding pulleys.
