Abstract

1289629 Pressing, spindles NORTHROP CAROLINA Inc 15 Dec 1970 [6 Oct 1970] 59603/70 Heading D1J In a winding machine in which package spindles 30 are linearly movable towards and away from a driving roller 14 (Fig. 1), carriages 46 carrying the spindles are moved along screws 53 (Fig. 5) by a variable torque motor 50 to maintain a desired pressure relationship between the growing package and the drive roller, so that package growth results in the motor being back-driven. The motor is also used, with reversed polarity, to disengage the package from the roller, motion of the package being damped by a brake 69 acting on the screw shaft, and an adjustable hydraulic damper 75. Cables (87) attached to springs and passing over cams (88) may be used to compensate for changing package weight and direction of motion (Fig. 4, not shown). The slot through which the spindle extends out of the housing 12 may be covered by a belt 100 moving with the spindle, which (Fig. 6) comprises a pneumatic brake 33, and an inflatable bladder 31 for securing the package former.
