Abstract

1381615 Grinding SOC NOUVELLE DE ROULEMENTS 16 Nov 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 52956/72 Heading B3D Means for feeding a workpiece against a grinding wheel on a centreless grinder comprises a cylinder housing two pistons separated by resilient means and connected for limited maximum separation by a member telescoping in one of them, one piston carrying a radial workpiece support and the other being connected to feed control means, the resilient means enabling the force transmitted between the pistons to be varied. The workpiece 20, an annulus as shown, is fed against the wheel 4 by a support shoe 1, being additionally supported by a magnetic plate 3 and a shoe 2. The shoe 1 is pivoted to a piston 5 having secured to it a connecting member 7. The member 7 slides within a second piston 6, the maximum separation between the pistons being determined by stops 15. The space 19 between the pistons is connected to a variable pressure compressed air source. To advance the workpiece, the piston 6 is advanced, the cushion of air between the pistons maintaining them at their maximum separation so that the piston 5 also advances when the latter presses the workpiece against the wheel. Further advance of the piston 6 to the limit of stop 10 brings stops 15 clear of the member 7 so that the piston 5 is influenced only by the air cushion in applying grinding pressure. The latter is arranged to be low initially and to increase as grinding progresses. Forward movement of the piston 5 is limited by an eccentric 8 on a shaft 23 running in slots 22 permitting external adjustment. The member 7 abuts the eccentric with depression of a slideable feeler 28. This permits control means to allow a dwell period for smoothing and then effect withdrawal of the shoe 1.
